    PC inquiry

For those of you in the PC know, what's a great pre-built machine company to go with? Is Alienware still good? I've read a thing or two about Gateway...what about Dell?  I'm thinking I'm going to upgrade soon and just built a machine over at Alienware. Anyone have any good stories to share? Argrax, what did you recently get?

I'm tired of building my own from scratch.

Yeah, and that was my first thought. I just went and built as similar a system as I could with Dell and found it to be more expensive (with an inferior gfx card) than the Alienware one I built.  I also remembered that Dell bought Alienware 2 years ago, so I'm hoping I wouldn't go wrong with either one I chose...if I do decide one or the other.

    Ibuypower,

I have personally been floored by their technical support (lifetime technical support for free in troubleshooting your hardware for you, but covering replacement is a warranty that's standard for 3 years but can be extended beyond that if you wish once your warranty's coming close to an end).  They've actually taught me new stuff over the phone that I never knew I could do.  Example:  I can test a power supply with a paper clip.  Yes, somoene actually got me to connect different wires with a paper clip while having power running through the PSU.  They're american assembled and the support is right here in America as well.

Their prices aren't bad either for pre-built machines.  They offer some pretty tricked out stuff and they can go from very basic use to EXXXTREEME.  And you know it's really extreme because I used 3 X's.

The last 3 computers I've bought (besides my VERY latest one, I put that together) have been Ibuypower and not only have I not had any compatibility issues with them, I've had no issues with shipping, no issues with damage, I've only had 2 instances where I did have to call tech support and both times it turned out to be something I did and was fixed on the spot.

A friend of mine however once ordered from them and did receive a system that wouldn't POST.  They talked to me over the phone, sent over a brand new motherboard and power supply just in case either one of them was the problem or both were the problem and sent return labels for the old ones to come back.  They didn't charge shipping to get the replacment parts and the parts came in 2 days.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm not normally an advocate of any brand, I'm just talking about my good experiences with them and from what I've seen as well.  However, they have been around for quite some time and have a good rap sheet, so it's up to you.

I've personally owned all three of those brands Zafo, Gateway, Alienware and now Dell.

I loved both my Gateways though one of them was actually bought back when they were called Gateway 2000 so it's not the most current opinion. That said, the customer service and technical support were both excellent.

Case in point, the second one I owned was during the transition period into a new home which was still partially under construction (ie. lots of dust/debris), to make a long story short they did not hesitate to send me two new power supplies in an attempt to troubleshoot a noise issue. The issue was eventually discovered to be a dying video card (this was back when fans/heat sinks were not the norm on cards) which eventually burned out. In spite of the fact that I almost assuredly killed the card due to poor 'housekeeping' of the case, they replaced it without question.

Also when I first took delivery of the second one, the corner of the monitor (19" CRT) was slightly malformed (just the plastic portion) yet they had another monitor on it's way within just a few minutes of being on the phone. The new one was delivered in a week or so and the old one picked up then.

If I could've found a Gateway specced the way I wanted it for a price comparable to Dell, I would've went with Gateway.

As for Alienware (the computer I just replaced), that was a different story. Among other things, the delivery date of the computer was pushed back more than a month because of video card shortages, the mail in rebates took months to receive, the customer service was abhorrent, the technical support not much better (both were handled overseas) and the case was really a poor design for something marketed as a hard core gaming box.

For most of the life of the computer I had to have the side of the case off with a small household fan (10-12") blowing inside of it to keep it from melting down (case was made of a lot of plastic which looked awesome but insulated more than it dissipated). The first video card went after a couple years and the motherboard failed just recently. Aside from all this, the performance of the machine stood the test of time well.

A worse story however is my buddy who bought one. Basically specced out his dream computer, spent a mint on it, he receives it and the machine doesn't post the second morning he goes to start it. Tech supports tells him to ship the computer back and his cost (because he's a Canadian customer), both ways, and they'll fix it. After fighting for a week or more with increasing levels of management, Alienware agreed to pay for half the shipping costs (so one way) and things were eventually resolved but make of that what you will.

And for Dell, I've bought three Dell machines in the past two years, one for Atlanis - works like a top, one for my Mother - no complaints that I've heard and just recently one for myself. The customer service is not stellar (again, overseas) and they were not very tech savvy when I asked about the RAM limitations of 32bit Vista but they handily beat the prices of other 'brand name' computers and were most flexible in terms of specifications as well. I've not had the machine long enough to comment too much on it but I can say the case is awesome (XPS) and the efforts gone to properly route the air flow are very impressive.

    *Edit

I should add that I attempted to price out the same machine I bought with a local computer shop and I maybe stood to save $300-400 dollars if I bought everything separately and have them put it together.

Also, as a result of them (Dell) doubling my 'Corporate Discount' from 6% to 12% by getting a 3 year warranty, the warranty itself cost me like an extra $12. I did the same thing with Atlanis' computer but have had yet to use it. If I had to pay full price for the extra warranty, I would not have done it but everyone's mileage varies when it comes to warranties.

    Re: PC inquiry

Wow Argrax, thanks for the detailed response.

I'm familiar with Gateway. It was my families very first PC back in '92 (I had an apple IIC growing up), but i've known them to use cheaper components to build their machines. That's why I was surprised to see them in the same arena as great gaming machines recently...I guess they stepped up their game.

As for Alienware, they're now owned by Dell so I'm not sure if that makes a difference in customer service or not. I think I'm pretty patient, so bad customer service I can deal with. My main concern is the quality of the machine.  The (insane) machine I built has liquid cooling on the processor so I'm hoping that they thought through their chassis temp and air flow when they came up with these configuration options.  I agree though, the case is old...in fact, it was a complaint in some reviews I read that it's still the same design as when they first came out way back when. They need to step it up and go aluminum like the others.

Well, I think i'm going to order one.  Maybe I can squeeze it in and have it before the holidays. It's going to be sweet, and I'm thinking I won't really need another machine for about 5 years.

I've been buying most if not all of my computer parts from TigerDirect.com for a while now.  While I buy parts because I like the build process, you can buy premade systems to avoid it.  They have the best customer service I have ever experienced.  Thier prices are very competitive too.  I'd stop by here before you make a final decision.

You spend all that money and get 1333 mhz RAM?  You failure!

Get the EPP 2.0 rated ram for 2000 mhz foo!  OCZ sells it, a few other brands too.  EDIT:  The 790i ultra mobo supports EPP 2.0 2 ghz ram, which means if the RAM you're getting supports EPP 2.0 to 2 ghz, it will auto configure to the correct timing and speed without any manual changes.  Pretty handy, and very fast!

Also, I suggest a Core i7 processor + x58 mobo (doesn't support EPP 2.0, that's an Nvidia technology on Nvidia mobos only).  But it's carazy good:

    http://www.guru3d.com/article/core-i7-multigpu-sli-crossfire-game-performance-review/

I have to warn you, it's a 20 page article with very detailed benchmarks and comments.  I do suggest it as a good read when you have the time, it goes to show you how much some games have been limited by CPU now instead of GPU.

    It's all that was offered.

But this coming from the guy that's been complaining about weird computer freezes?  Wink

    Re: PC inquiry

    HEY!!!

I think that's because I have a corrupted page file.  Well, I know I have a corrupted page file, I just think that's what's causing the problems.  I've just been lazy and haven't fixed it.

It's been fine otherwise.  I guess it was just coincidental from opening WoW twice and having it freeze both times at different intervals.

That sucks that they don't offer that stuff yet.  It'd be a pretty badass machine, not to say yours wouldn't be.  4870x2 is a badass piece of machinery in and of itself.  Just go easy on the heat ok?  Get Rivatuner and make sure that reference cooler doesn't go below 75% fan speed.  Or get an aftermarket cooler for it.  Those things get H-O-T
